Us: Music and More Celebrate Community |
With music as the motivator and catalyst, we engage students in the educational process, open them up to learning, and provide the vehicle through which they are able to transfer the skills they learn through the arts -- higher order thinking, problem solving ability, perception, imagination and creativity -- to the mastery of other academic subjects and in the process they learn positive behaviors and attitudes, develop social abilities, and strengthen verbal and communication skills. The Core Program The Boys Choir of Harlem's program incorporates three core elements fully integrated as part of an extended school day which runs from 8:30 am - 6:30 pm:
The Boys Choir of Harlem Inc. provides the Artistic instruction, Student Support Services and special activities. Academic instruction is the purview of our on-site school, The Choir Academy of Harlem, which we operate in partnership with the NYC Board of Education which provides facilities, maintenance/custodial services in addition to instructional services.
Academic classes take place until 2:30 pm, artistic classes are woven into the academic schedule, and rehearsals begin at 2:30 pm. Counseling, tutoring and college prep activities take place throughout the day. There are also special weekend tutorials, vacation and holiday activities, a touring curriculum, and a full summer program. A Curriculum Integration Team composed of artistic and academy faculty is developing Curriculum Resource Guides to achieve more formal interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary links between academic and artistic instruction to enhance student learning in academic classrooms and build on their experiences in artistic classes. Curriculum Over 500 boys and girls get a complete New York State Regents, college prep curriculum of arts and sciences.
In addition to the classical
academic disciplines, students are exposed to a competitive artistic
experience through course work in music, theory, piano, movement and
dance. |
