Tour Review: Ma'ariv
From Ma'ariv, Friday, May 28, 1999, by Yossi Harsonosky (translated): Singing Like Angels What heights these children are able to reach in singing, and not just children, but children of Harlem, a town whose connotations are not usually identified with culture-seeking youth. The question is of course, what could we expect from them, and the Boys' Choir of Harlem far surpassed all our expectations.
Both halves of the evening were
excellent: the traditional classical part devoted to pure music, and the
wide-ranging entertainment section that included dancing with excellent
choreography. The choir, conducted by Walter J. Turnbull, is one of the
finest of its kind in quality of tone,

Someone
called them "Souls saved by song," and only after one hears
their voices, you can understand the emotional meaning of this. The
Boys of Harlem are a choir that depends on discipline in order to produce
pure music...it's not just the scope of the repertoire, but the optimal
execution of every style, classical and modern.
in
the exact balance between the singers, in moving between ringing notes and
fantastic intonation, in harmony without a flaw and in achieving excellent
performance. This went far beyond what we expected, and it says a great
deal about the cultural power of black song in the USA, and it is not only
as a matter of black music, but of education to music generally that one
should view this choir. You have to close your eyes and listen!
